### Can Australian businesses still surcharge card payments?

On 1 October 2026, eftpos, Visa and Mastercard introduced no-surcharge rules in Australia following the Reserve Bank of Australia’s review of retail payments, and American Express, UnionPay and PayPal said they would do the same. That means businesses can no longer add a fee because a customer pays by card, so a low flat rate such as Kokipay’s Low Cost EFTPOS matters more than ever. See the [RBA’s FAQs](https://www.rba.gov.au/payments-and-infrastructure/review-of-retail-payments-regulation/2026-03/conclusions-paper/faqs/) for details.
